I really enjoy Mae Tawao and chilling in this area. One of my favourite places to visit and stay over on holidays. It is a long way from pretty much everywhere.

The entire area is still unspoilt unlike most areas in this region and neighbouring countries.

You need to allow a day to get here and back home. Then 5 days in the area to get the most out of the effort to get here.

So much to see and do and you have the super friendly local Karen people. One of those places you will always come back again and again.

If you have time. It is worth booking the boat to take you up the river to Naw Ta Waterfall.
It is possible to camp on the river barge or rent the room up the top in the big house with the view of the waterfall and river.

You must bring your own sleeping bag, mosquito net and food etc. Nothing is provided or available for purchase.

Take your own beers for the trip.

This is what greets when you pull up to the barge on the river’s edge.

Walking to the house from the river
This is not for those without balancing skills and willing to grab and hold on to things as you clamber up the embankment.

The barge to the edge of the river has a long plank of wood that takes two big steps before you can grab on the a makeshift wooden railing. Then pull yourself up and along until reaching a more normal walkway leading up to the house.

We were sitting up in the big house at the top in the “Master” bedroom.

While we were having beers the mum and daughter caught a fish, at first I thought it was an eel.

We paid the the Captain of our luxurious boat an extra 100 baht to wait while we had another hour chilling and finishing off the last of the beers.

No mains power or local phone reception over there. The kids on the Myanmar side cross the river and attend school in Mae Tawo. Many of the locals on both sides of the river are related.
